Casting Note: Kavin Moore, CSA

Our goal is to create a warm and welcoming casting process. The team strives to lead with respect, kindness, and generosity. In regard to the character descriptions – they outline the characters as described in the script and in consultation with the creative team. They do not aim to be all-encompassing representations of who might fill these roles. We aim for an expansive and deliberate casting process. We acknowledge that the characters in the script are traditionally presented as either male or female (using he/him or she/her pronouns). Our character descriptions are marked with HIGHER VOICE or LOWER VOICE. Higher voiced roles are written for those with soprano, mezzo, and alto vocal ranges.  Lower voice roles are written for tenor, baritone, and bass vocal ranges. We warmly welcome submissions from individuals who identify as gender non-conforming, genderqueer, transgender, or non-binary for the roles that resonate most with their identity.

Please reach out to Kavin Moore at Kavin.Moore@MarriottTheatre.com or 847-465-1326 ex. 1  if you have any questions or access needs.

MS. FRIZZLE (Higher Voice, 30s+) An ebullient teacher with an indomitable can-do spirit and a voracious appetite for teaching. Ever-so-slightly irresponsible and ever-so-much-so omnipotent. Ethel Merman belter with a rich Mary Poppins soprano. Able to easily flip between the two within the same song.

ARNOLD (Lower Voice, 18+ to play 11 years old) A teacher’s pet and very proud of it. Charming, sensitive, unreasonably intelligent. Struck out of orbit by the arrival of his know-it-all cousin, Arnold soon finds himself motivated by jealousy competing for Ms. Frizzle’s attention. Contemporary musical theatre bari-tenor.

JANET (Higher Voice, 18+ to play 11 years old) A transfer student, Arnold’s cousin. Brilliant, competitive, total know-it all who tends to brag about how she can be better at anything. Underneath her many layers, she has a deep desire to make her cousin proud. Contemporary musical theatre belter with a very strong head voice.

RALPHIE (Lower Voice, 18+ to play 11 years old) The class clown. Laid back, always looking to turn hardship into a punchline. Ralphie thinks he’s bottom of the class in terms of intelligence, so he chooses to joke rather than try and risk failure. Contemporary musical theatre high baritone.

WANDA (Higher Voice, Asian, 18+ to play 11 years old) The alien hunter. Fierce, uncompromising, doesn’t have a crush on Carlos. Walks around like the hero of an alien action movie, and again, doesn’t have a crush on Carlos. Contemporary musical theatre belter.

CARLOS (Lower Voice, Latine, 18+ to play 11 years old)  The other alien hunter, as long as alien hunting is still what Wanda is into. Keeper of anti-alien weapons, and also of terribly corny punch lines, Carlos is Wanda’s action hero sidekick. He doesn’t have a crush on Wanda – this cannot be stressed enough. Contemporary musical theatre high baritone.
