Holy Smokes! 'SISTER ACT' at Marriott Theatre is One Heavenly Romp!
Marriott Theatre opens their 2016 Subscription Series with this high-energy, feel-good musical comedy that had the audience on its feet! Featuring an upbeat score by Tony, Grammy and Academy Award-winner Alan Menken, with lyrics by Grammy Award-winner Glenn Slater, this joyful musical is based on the popular Whoopi Goldberg film of the same name.
The plot tells the hilarious story of Deloris Van Cartier, a disco diva who witnesses a crime and is taken to a convent for protective custody - the last place anyone would try to find her. Once inside, Deloris' larger than life personality continually butts heads with the strait-laced Mother Superior. But with her powerful voice, she inspires the choir and the nuns to reach for new heights and changes everyone in her path.
SISTER ACT stars Stephanie Umoh as "Deloris Van Cartier" (Ragtime on Broadway) who is sensational with an amazing voice, beauty and talent to match. Chicago theatre legend, Hollis Resnik stars as "Mother Superior" (National Tours of Sister Act, Les Misérables, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and Thoroughly Modern Millie; Spring Awakening at Marriott) and together, they create a winning duo. As always, Don Forston as "Monsignor O'Hara", is a welcome addition to the cast. But it's Tiffany Tatreau as "Mary Robert" who steals the show with her powerful vocals that take the house down…every time! Costume designer Nancy Missimi takes the challenge of making the nun's habits colorful and fun.
Once again, glorious music, creative dance and eye-catching costumes ring great praises. You can say that again, sister!
